Communication & Conflict Resolution in Polygynous Families

I understand that communication and conflict resolution in polygynous families can be challenging, especially during special occasions like Ramadan and Eid. It can be difficult to balance the needs of multiple households and navigate conflicts that may arise.

Ramadan is a month of spiritual reflection and fasting, while Eid is a joyous celebration that marks the end of Ramadan. These occasions can bring up feelings of joy and togetherness, but they can also exacerbate tensions and conflicts between co-wives.

But what if you are not Muslim and don’t celebrate Ramadan and Eid? Can the same tips and solutions apply to you? Absolutely!

Here are some valuable solutions and tips for communication and conflict resolution in polygynous families during Ramadan and Eid, regardless of your background or beliefs:

  1. Listen actively: When communicating with your husband and co-wives, make sure to listen actively and empathetically. Try to understand their point of view and acknowledge their feelings. Be the reflection of listening that you want to receive.
  2. Be respectful: Show respect for each other’s beliefs and traditions, even if you don’t share them. Avoid criticizing or belittling each other’s cultural customs or practices. Learn to respectfully disagree.
  3. Communicate clearly: Be clear and direct in your communication, and avoid passive-aggressive behavior or indirect communication. Let the only shade around you come from the leaves on the trees.
  4. Find common ground: Look for ways to find common ground and work together towards shared goals. This can help to foster a sense of unity and cooperation. An open mind and heart can help offset the findings of common ground(s).
  5. Practice conflict resolution: When conflicts arise, let resolve be the front runner. Addressing each other in a respectful and constructive way. This may involve compromise, negotiation, or seeking the help of a mediator or advisor (ie The Co•Wife Coach).

These are just a few tips to help you navigate communication and conflict resolution in polygynous families during the holidays.
